Playtech Expands Canadian Presence With Alberta Market Entry

Alberta’s newly opened regulated online gaming market has added Playtech to its supplier landscape, with the company launching its casino and live gaming content through licensed operator partners from the first day of market activity.

The entry gives Playtech another regulated foothold in Canada following its launch in Ontario in 2022. The company also entered the Ontario market when regulated iGaming went live there, making Alberta the latest part of its wider North American expansion.

Through its partnerships in the province, operators can offer a selection of Playtech content already used in regulated markets elsewhere in North America. The available portfolio includes Adventures Beyond Wonderland, Mega Fire Blaze™ Roulette and Oink Oink Oink™.

Playtech said its work with operators across established regulated jurisdictions provides experience it can apply as Alberta’s online gaming sector develops. The company expects to continue working with its partners while expanding the content available in the province over time.

Playtech Extends Its Canadian Regulated-Market Presence

The Alberta launch represents another step in Playtech’s activities across regulated North American jurisdictions. Its Canadian presence began with Ontario’s regulated market opening in 2022, when the supplier also participated from launch day.

Four years later, the company has followed a similar approach in Alberta by entering as the province begins operating its regulated online gaming sector.

Shimon Akad, Playtech Chief Operating Officer, stated: “Entering Alberta’s regulated iGaming market on its first day is a significant milestone for Playtech’s North American expansion strategy. We are pleased to be supporting our partners with some of our strongest-performing content and are committed to working closely with them as the market evolves, broadening our offering and helping them deliver engaging player experiences to support their long-term success.”

Playtech’s initial content selection brings together casino and live products that the company says have already recorded strong player engagement in regulated North American markets.

Its work in Alberta will focus on supporting licensed operator partners as the market develops. Playtech also plans to broaden its offering while continuing to work closely with those partners.

Regulation and Player Protection Form Part of the Launch

Playtech enters Alberta under the regulatory structure created by the iGaming Alberta Act and supported by AGLC’s iGaming Standards.

The company also highlighted the province’s centralised self-exclusion system when discussing the regulatory environment surrounding the new market. Playtech described the measure as an important part of player protection within Alberta’s framework.

Charmaine Hogan, Global Head of Government Relations at Playtech, added: “Alberta has set a strong regulatory foundation for its iGaming market, and the establishment of a centralised self-exclusion system is a particularly welcome step in safeguarding players. Well-designed regulation, underpinned by meaningful player protection tools, is what allows regulated markets to thrive and channel players away from the black market. We will continue to work constructively with the Alberta iGaming Corporation and industry partners as the market matures.”

Playtech said it intends to maintain cooperation with the Alberta iGaming Corporation and other industry participants as regulated online gaming develops in the province.

The regulatory framework and the availability of player protection measures form part of the environment in which Playtech and its licensed operator partners will operate. The company’s launch places its products in the market from the outset while giving it the opportunity to expand its offering as Alberta’s regulated sector matures.

Alberta Becomes Playtech’s Latest Canadian Market

Playtech plans to continue developing its activities alongside its operator partners as the market progresses. The company has also indicated that it will expand the range of content available while maintaining engagement with Alberta’s industry and regulatory bodies.

By joining Alberta from the opening of its regulated online gaming market, Playtech has added another jurisdiction to its North American operations while extending a Canadian presence that began with Ontario four years earlier.
